Frontier Area — Nye Resolution

RESOLUTION NO. 2003-42A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF A FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR THE
BRIGHT ANGEL FRONTIER PROJECT IN NYE COUNTY, NEVADA.

WHEREAS, a representative of the Bright Angel Frontier Project has met with Nye County elected officials and staff to discuss the project; and,

WHEREAS, the project advocates a new form of federal land management in one selected valley, which would combine historic preservation, outdoor recreation, and economic development in a form that substantially recreates the experience of the nineteenth-century frontier; and,

WHEREAS, Nye County includes many historic places and artifacts important to the westward expansion and development of the United States of America; and,

WHEREAS, many residents of Nye County are proud of their heritage and the contributions of previous generations to the development of our nation; and,

WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners wishes to help the present generation and future generations to understand and appreciate those contributions; and

WHEREAS, many portions of Nye County would benefit from further economic development and increased visitation; and,

WHEREAS, Nye County contains a number of locations that may be suitable for a single-valley version of the Bright Angel Frontier Project; and,

WHEREAS, the United States Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management manages public lands comprising more than ninety-eight percent (98%) of the land in Nye County; and,

WHEREAS, Nye County, Nevada, is the situs jurisdiction for the proposed project and a political subdivision of the Sovereign State of Nevada,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED as follows:

1.  The Nye County Board of County Commissioners hereby recommends to the government of the United States of America that it authorize and fund a feasibility study of the proposed Bright Angel Frontier Project within Nye County, in collaboration with the United States Department of the Interior and local governments.

2.  The Nye County Board of County Commissioners hereby recommends that the study involve national and regional historical societies, states, counties, municipalities and tribal governments throughout the region.

3.  Nye County staff shall cooperate in the preparation of any such feasibility study and represent the interests of the residents of Nye County.

4.  The Board of County Commissioners will reserve final judgment on the feasibility of the project and will revisit the issue of rendering support to the proposed project after review of the results of the feasibility study.

5.  The Board of County Commissioners directs the Director of the Nye County Natural Resources Office to transmit copies of this resolution to the following:

a.  U.S. Department of the Interior;
b.  The Bright Angel Frontier Project;
c.  Appropriate members of Congress;
d.  Any other interested Federal, tribal, state or local governments;
e.  Any interested historical societies, institutions or organizations;
f.  Any interested members of the public.

This resolution passed at the Board of County Commissioners meeting held this 6th day of January 2004.
